Empowering students and teachers to perform to their potential
Practical (and proven) mindfulness techniques for
reducing anxiety and increasing cognitive performance
If you work in the education system as a teacher or an administrator, you know teachers and students have to face a number of tough challenges.
There’s the stress of testing, deadlines, paperwork, grading, meetings – not to mention the rest of daily life.
Then, there’s the state of the world such as the worry and sadness of the latest school tragedies.
Saying “it’s a lot” is an understatement. And many are burned out, or on the road to it.
But what if there was a way to better handle all of these demands? And not just in a grit-your-teeth, spinning plates, kind of way, but with a clearer mind and calmer nerves?
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a method which helps to create calm while also raising attendance rates, improving test scores and reducing behavioral incidents?
Well, I’m here to tell you there is.
It’s called mindfulness.
The way I teach mindfulness is simple, easy to learn and makes a real, measurable impact. Plus, as a former teacher, I’ve honed and curated the tools you’ll need for the classroom (and beyond).
I wasn’t sure how the faculty would respond. Would they find the material a waste of time? On the contrary, the teachers felt so positive after the meeting and were eager to learn more! The strategies helped ourselves and our students to handle everyday stressors and expectations much better.” – L.S., counselor, Erie County
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the here and now. Mindful awareness (mindfulness) helps us pause and see what is true in the present moment – and to do so without judgement.
It offers an opportunity to break the cycle of negative behaviors and habits (either towards ourselves or others) and bring peace and clarity to everyday life.
How mindfulness can help in schools
Mindful awareness allows us to act from a place of calmness. We make far better decisions from this place. And if we get stressed we can resolve things faster (and more harmoniously) than arguing or lashing out.
These kinds of healthy habits serve students and teachers well, contributing to more pleasant and focused learning environments. The tools of mindfulness go into the “coping kit” and can reduce behavioral incidents, increase attendance and boost self-esteem – to name a few benefits. I’ll go into more detail about that shortly, but for now it’s important to know…
I love the strategies. We have learned to calm down and let it go.” – Master Teacher Attendee from Western NY Master Teacher Training, Erie County
Who am I and how do I know this works?
I’m JoAnna, and I was a middle school math teacher for over 6 years in both public and charter schools, in the inner city of Buffalo.
I’ve been in the trenches. I know the kinds of pressure that comes from “If your kids don’t score high enough on this test our school might close” and I’ve watched students and teachers struggle under the weight of it.
A few years into my life as a teacher, the “high stakes testing” pressures were through the roof, as the fate of the entire grade 7-12 building rested on whether the 7-8 grade math and ELA test scores were good enough.
Between testing, lesson plans, evaluations, meetings, developing and nurturing relationships with students, parents, and families, I was exhausted, overwhelmed and stressed to the max.
I began going to yoga classes after work to de-stress and I came to understand that mindful awareness (mindfulness) could help me stop spinning and see more clearly in the present moment (and to do so without judgement) which was immensely calming and empowering.
I signed up to a slew of mindfulness seminars and retreats and learned from great teachers across the mindfulness landscape (positive thinking, yoga, breathwork, neuroplasticity, brain science, affirmations, mudras). Finally, I completed a yoga teacher training course which featured mindfulness as a key component.
I felt so much more centered and calm, better able to deal with the pressures around me. My relationships (with colleagues, family members, and myself) became increasingly harmonious and I felt more confident and solid within myself, and inherently worthy of my own love and care.
I was eager to share what I’d learned, particularly with those I’d been in the trenches with: my colleagues and students. I knew they were facing the same challenges (namely burnout, overwhelm, anxiety and low self-esteem) so…
I decided to bring mindfulness and yoga into the classroom.
At first, my fellow teachers were a little skeptical and would ask questions like:
“Are the kids really going to go for it?”
“But how are the boys with it?”
“What about ___ (student whose behaviors they were struggling with)? How is she doing to deal with it?”
I asked them to keep an open-mind. After all, it had worked for me (and I hoped it would work for my students!).
I started with a “positive affirmation of the day” with my students (as part of their mathematical bellwork routine as they came into class). I was delighted to see even challenging students join in as we wrote positive affirmations and made posters to decorate the classroom walls.
Over time, through trial and error, I developed a classroom-relevant system which encompassed other mindful practices such as movement and breathing.
My students loved it!
And I got the green light from my administrators to replace one out of the ten periods of math I taught each week with a period of mindfulness instruction.
What began as quick, simple techniques to help calm us down and get us refocused became revolutionary. Attendance rose, the students achieved higher test scores, and there were fewer behavioral incidents.
What’s more, my mindfulness program was featured in the news, and I was named the youngest Master Teacher in NYS because of my work as a math teacher specializing in mindfulness.
My school adopted the mindfulness program and they still use it to this day (4 years later) while I moved on to teach mindfulness and yoga to schools across New York.
I was concerned how the students would respond, or if they would understand the idea of mindfulness. I needn’t have worried! You were able to bring the activities down to their level and they enjoyed it. I tell colleagues that this presentation is fantastic. I feel it’s a must for all classes.” L. M., teacher, Westchester County
Finding a way to get through to children can often be the biggest challenge and if we, as educators do not capture their attention right away, we almost never recover. This did not happen. My favorite part of the presentations is how relatable the information is. Everything is well-received and understood by the students. They remember the information because it means something to them. I would tell my best friend that if they wanted to reach every student in the room, Ms JoAnna is the answer!” R.B., assistant teacher, Westchester County
